Sylvester Stallone is returning to the world of Samaritan, it’s been revealed, as Amazon invests in a sequel to the 2021 superhero film.

Sylvester Stallone has hardly avoided the world of superhero films, as his supporting turn in the Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise proved, but it wasn’t until 2022’s Samaritan that he opted to lead one. A pretty decent film, helmed by Julius Avery, it worked nicely in the first half, got a bit generic in the second. But it attracted enough eyeballs to keep Amazon – who purchased and streamed the movie – happy.

Particularly happy, it seems, as we now learn that, a year after the original debuted, plans are afoot for Samaritan 2. Sylvester Stallone is on board too, and is set to take on the lead role again. He’s also producing, via his Balboa Productions company.

It’s unclear if the director of the first film, Julius Avery, is going to re-sign on the dotted line for the sequel. One returnee who’s definite though is screenwriter Bragi G Schut, who will be penning the follow-up. They came up with the idea and the screenplay for the first movie too, selling the completed script and then eventually watching it turn into a global streaming hit.

The original was set up at MGM, which by the time the movie was ready for release had been acquired by Amazon. As such, Amazon debuted Samaritan via its Prime Video platform. The sequel once again has MGM behind it, and with Amazon’s money backing the film, it will also go to Prime Video when it’s ready. It’s unclear if the sequel will get a full cinematic release this time around though. The first was supposed to be out in cinemas until Covid disrupted plans. We wait and see what the initial destination is for the sequel.

The plan appears to be to get the film moving once the current actor’s strike comes to an end. As we seem to be saying at the end of half of the news stories on this site at the moment, lord knows when that’s going to be. More news, of course, as we hear it. Hopefully, we eventually get to a Samaritan 4 that pits Stallone against Dolph Lundgren. Perhaps not in Russia this time.
