Apple TV+ is introducing a second price rise in 12 months, as the cost of the streaming service heads up to £8.99 a month.

Well, pretty much every other streaming service has done it, so why not Apple? It’s been announced in the US that pricing for the Apple TV+ service is to get a significant increase, from the current price of $6.99 a month to a new cost of $9.99. That was after a rise from $4.99 to $6.99 last year.

Here in the UK though, we’re getting a second price increase for the service in 12 months. A year ago, the price for Apple TV+ was £4.99 a month, and it went up to £6.99, which is the fee that’s been asked for across most of 2023. However, that’s going up seemingly effective pretty much immediately to £8.99 a month.

We’ve dug out the Film Stories Calendar Of Doom (FSCoD), and that tell us that this latest jump is a price increase of some 28 percent.

The Apple TV+ website in the UK has now been updated with the new pricing, which you can see here.

A seven day free trial is still offered.

Apple’s percentage price hike for its streaming offering is from what we can ascertain the biggest of anyone in the marketplace, appreciating it was coming from a lower original price point. Furthermore, Apple doesn’t have known plans for advertising on its service, to offset what it asks for from customers.

What Apple also doesn’t have is the depth of material than many of its rivals offer. Its investment has gone towards fewer, premium productions rather than trying to emulate Netflix and bring out a new movie every week. Notably, this price rise comes the week after its $200m Martin Scorsese film, Killers Of The Flower Moon, arrives in cinemas.

In time honoured fashion, corporate speak has been wheeled out to justify the price bump. Apple’s statement on the matter reads, “we are focused on delivering the best experiences possible for our customers by consistently adding high-quality entertainment, content, and innovative features to our services.”

“Since launching four years ago, Apple TV+ has made history for streaming services by crossing major milestones in a short span of time, thanks to its extensive selection of award-winning and broadly acclaimed series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment.”

Few are arguing the quality. Most of us are just looking at our bank statements instead.
