Scream 7 is now in production after multiple delays, Matthew Lillard will be reprising his role of Stu ā€“ somehow.

A spoiler for the first Scream film lies ahead.

It’s no secret that the next Scream film has been fraught with difficulties, from the firing of Melissa Bererra to Jenna Ortega leaving, followed by director Christopher Landon.

Then there was the uncertainty over franchise stalwart Neve Campbell returning ā€“ she is onboard following the resolution of a pay dispute ā€“ and finally the return of original screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who is not on writing duties this time around but is instead directing. He has directed just one feature previously, the dark comedy Teaching Mrs Tingle, which was released in 1999. It starred Helen Mirren as a malicious teacher taken hostage by three of her students. It flew under the radar at the time and is well worth tracking down.

According to Deadline, a franchise favourite whom fans have been clamouring to see again is finally coming back ā€“ Matthew Lillard is returning as Stu Macher.

Quite how this is possible will remain a mystery, at least until we see the film. For those who havenā€™t seen it or need a refresher ā€“ spoilers for the first Scream ā€“ Stu is one of the two original Ghostface killers. He worked alongside Billy Loomis, played by Skeet Ulrich. It was a marvellous performance, a mix of truly unhinged behaviour and dash of terror, especially during the scene were heā€™s stabbed by Billy.

The biggest obstacle to his return is the television Sidney (Neve Campbell) fatally dropped on his head. Mind you, Ulrich reprised his role ā€“ albeit as a ghost ā€“ in Scream 5 and Scream 6, so it seems anything is now possible.

The Scream 7 cast also includes Courteney Cox, Scott Foley, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos.

Scream 7 is in production and is aiming to be in cinemas in February 2026.
