While it’s by no means a done deal, Sherlock Holmes 3 is very much in active development and Jude Law says they now have a script.
Sherlock Holmes 3 is a film that has been described as ‘a long and unfinished path’ and ‘a sequel that refuses to happen’, by our editor in fact in a piece last year that looked at the development history of a project that seems to just keep hitting roadblocks.
However many impediments seem to emerge in the project’s path, everybody involved has always insisted that they want to get it made. Jude Law, the incumbent Doctor Watson of the series is one such supporter of the project and while out promoting his new Star Wars show, Skeleton Crew, the actor offered a brief rundown of where Sherlock Holmes 3 currently sits.
“The plan has been evolving over how many years it’s been now, probably nearly ten years,” he said. “There’s a great will to make it, and a great will amongst us all to get it right to do it, to find the time, to find the right team.”
According to the actor, a new version of the script has been penned but whether it passes muster is seemingly yet to be determined. “I think there’s a new iteration of the script I haven’t yet read,” added Law before reminding us that we’ve been at this stage of the proceedings before by adding, “and then there’s a case of ‘How expensive is it? And can we get it made?”
Law also reflected on the best part of the series for him personally, that being his collaboration with Holmes himself. Robert Downey Jr. Citing his friendship with producer Susan Downey and her husband, it seems all concerned actually want to get this film off the blocks.
According to Guy Ritchie, director of the first two films, it’s Robert Downey Jr who will ultimately decide whether the project gets made. Last year. Ritchie said this about the project: “Well, honestly, I left this up to Robert [Downey Jr]. So Robert wanted to be in charge of this. The ball’s in his court, so he’s in charge of the script, he’s in charge of the whole thing. I’ve moonwalked out of that until there’s a time for me to get involved.”
Hopefully, that time is soon but until then we’ll have to look for our Sherlock fix elsewhere. 2025’s Enola Holmes 3 anyone?
