With its arcade-level games and eye-watering price, the Neo Geo was something of a holy grail among 1990s gamers, and still enjoys a cult following today.
The NEOGEO Mini recently emerged to scratch the original system’s nostalgic itch, but its somewhat flimsy design arguably failed to capture the luxurious, high-end feel of its 90s predecessors.
If a recent tweet from SNK’s official account is to be believed, though, we could be getting what it describes as a “next-gen” Neo Geo, with a “modern design and wonderful play feeling”.
This mystery system will also, SNK says, be able to connect to the NEOGEO Mini, though exactly why we’d want to do that isn’t yet clear. “The new hardware will provide you a NEOGEO journey you have never expeirenced (sic)” the company pledges.
A Next-Gen NEOGEO hardware is coming after NEOGEO Mini.
With a modern design and a wonderful play feeling and you can even link it to NEOGEO Mini, the new hardware will provide you a NEOGEO journey that you have never expeirenced.Stay tuned for more information!#SNK #NEOGEO

Given that the current SNK is a very different entity from the one that released the Neo Geo MVS in the 1990s, it’s hard to know what to expect from what it claims is a next-gen console. A fancier version of the NEOGEO Mini that again plays emulated versions of those old arcade hits? Or something more ambitious?
As SNK itself says, “Stay tuned for more information”. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
