Director Sofia Coppola has unexpectedly scrapped the period drama she was planning to shoot with Kirsten Dunst this year, saying it was “too sad”.
Having made the likes of Priscila and Marie Antoinette, director Sofia Coppola was all set to begin filming another true-life period drama later this year. Although little was known about the project (a title, plot details and suchlike hadn’t been announced), it was going to star Coppola’s regular collaborator, Kirsten Dunst.
Talking to Elle magazine, however, it seems that the project has since been scrapped. The reason? Because it “felt too sad,” the filmmaker said.
“It’s confusing in these dark times. I want to offer some hope and beauty in the world, but then you also don’t want to do something shallow, because it feels like a time for deep things.”
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Dunst had previously said in an interview with Vogue that Coppola’s script would see her play a real-life figure, but “not someone who I’d consider famous.”

With Coppola’s mystery script now abandoned, Dunst has since moved onto a rather different project – a sequel to A Minecraft Movie. According to Deadline, she’ll play Alex, joining Jack Black’s Steve and returning director Jared Hess.
Coppola may want to make something lighter but still deep, but ironically, that’s sort of where Dunst is headed: to a frothy fantasy comedy which certainly has a modicum of depth – what with all that digging and mining. (Sorry.)
Dunst had previously told Town & Country that she wanted to be in a Minecraft film because her kids loved it, but also because she wanted to “make a movie where I don’t lose money.”
I think some people call that ‘manifesting’ these days.
There’s no word on what Coppola’s up to next. We’re quietly intrigued about the “too sad” project she’s put on the shelf, though. If word of what it was comes to light, we’ll let you know.
