The new trailer for Ubisoft’s open-world Lucas-’em-up Star Wars Outlaws has emerged. Find out more about its plot and characters here:

Update: As promised, here’s the new story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, which provides an in-depth look at its post-Empire Strikes Back story and characters. Even casual Star Wars fans will probably be able to pick out at least half a dozen familiar faces, ships or settings, and the whole thing looks like a love letter to the Original Trilogy.

As revealed earlier today, Star Wars Outlaws is due for release on the 30th August for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC. Is it just us, or does the fur-clad chap at the start – who’s named Sliro, we’re told – look a bit like David Brent? It’s just us, isn’t it.

Our original story follows…

Original story 9th April 2024: Ubisoft has been teasing its open-world, single-player videogame Star Wars Outlaws for a while now, but has been careful not to let slip exactly when it would release. Someone at Ubisoft Japan must have rather crimson cheeks, though, because the game’s release date has slipped out – it’s the 30th August.

The date emerged in a YouTube description for the new trailer, which is due to emerge later today. The slip was spotted by Gematsu before the placeholder page for the trailer’s premiere was hurriedly taken down.

Developer Massive has been working away on Star Wars Outlaws for at least three years now, but the game and its title were only formally unveiled in 2023. Billed as the “first-ever open-world Star Wars game” – which is true, depending on your point of view – it introduces the scruffy rapscallion Kay Vess and her sidekick Nix in an adventure that takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.

On your travels, you’ll be able to visit Tatooine and the charming resort of Mos Eisley, where you’ll have the option of running missions at the behest of the corpulent gangster Jabba the Hutt. Alternatively, you’ll also be able to double-cross him, and play rival crime syndicates off against each other. There’s lots of shooting, stealth, and riding around on vehicles that all magically float somehow. It all sounds pretty jolly so far.

As mentioned above, a new trailer is due to release later today (9th April), so we’ll update this post with that when we get it. We’re good like that.

Star Wars Outlaws is in development for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC, and it’ll be out on the 30th August. Thanks, Ubisoft Japan! These things happen.
