The anticipated folk horror film Starve Acre, which features Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, has secured key releases in the US and UK.

Following a successful world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival earlier this month, independent development company Cornerstone Films has secured distribution deals across the United States, UK and much of Europe for its upcoming folk horror, Starve Acre. The film features British talents, Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark (the latter lighting up the screen in the unnerving horror character study, Saint Maud) and received plenty of praise from reviewers. We felt the same, with our own James Harvey describing it as “folk horror with a capital ‘f’ with an emotional story and powerhouse performances from Smith and Clark.

Set in 1970s rural England, the film sees a “couple’s idyllic family life is thrown into turmoil when their son starts acting out of character”, to quote its synopsis.

Director Daniel Kokotajlo made a splashy impression a few years ago with his memorable debut feature, Apostasy. Starve Acre is said to possess a pretty sinister feel, a mood that we’ve seen both Smith and Clark excel at in recent years, with Last Night In Soho and Saint Maud respectively.

The project was developed by BBC Film, and ‘funded by Access Entertainment with BBC Film and the BFI.’ Remaining territories are set to gain distribution deals at this week’s American Film Market. We’ll bring you a release date just as soon as we hear it.
