Stephen King fans are truly feasting this year. We’ve already had three rather good adaptations of the writer’s novels – The Monkey, The Life Of Chuck and The Long Walk – and we’ve still got The Running Man to look forward to in November.

And more is on the way, too. Deadline reports that an adaptation of the novella Rat is now in the works. Rat appears in King’s If It Bleeds collection, published in 2020. That same collection is also home to The Life Of Chuck and Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, which was also adapted into a film in 2022 by Netflix.

Rat is the story of Drew Larson, a writer “cursed by his own ambition. Each attempt at a novel has ended in disaster—illness, misfortune, or worse. Determined to break the cycle, he retreats to a desolate cabin in the Maine woods, convinced this time will be different. But as a violent storm traps him in isolation, Drew’s body falters and his mind begins to unravel. In the grip of fever and madness, a stranger appears—an uncanny visitor who promises salvation and success…for a price Drew can barely comprehend.”

Isolated location? Check. Psychological torment? Check. Mysterious stranger who is definitely not evil? Check! Rat has all the ingredients for a great horror film, but it’s up to Isaac Ezban to make that into a reality.

Ezban is set to direct the film from a script by The Haunting Of Hill House’s Jeff Howard. Jay Van Hoy, who produced Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse and The Witch is in the producer’s chair. Ezban previously directed Párvulos: Children of the Apocalypse which received very positive reviews upon its release in 2024.

It’s still early days for Rat so there’s no casting news or potential release window, but we’ll keep you posted on those.
