The Duffer brothers, best known for creating Stranger Things, are set to release their first film for Paramount in November 2028.
The Stranger Things finale finally rumbled to a close in December 2025, marking the end of an era for one of Netflix’s most successful shows. It also marked the beginning of the end for series creators Matt and Ross Duffer, whose contract with the streaming giant ended four months later in April 2026.
The duo are now formally installed at Paramount Skydance, where they’re currently writing and directing a new movie under a four-year deal previously announced last year. What exactly are they working on? Absolutely no idea, as seemingly everything about the project is being kept out of the public.
Everything apart from the release date, that is. Per multiple Hollywood outlets (like Variety), the Duffer brothers’ mystery film is due to appear in cinemas on the 3rd November 2028.
The Duffers joined Paramount not long after its $8bn merger with Skydance. In the aftermath, the newly-merged entity announced its plans to increase the number of movies it put out each year, with sequels announced for the lucrative Top Gun and Transformers franchises.
At the same time, Paramount seemingly began looking at Netflix for poachable talent. As well as the Duffers, the studio hired Cindy Holland and Matt Thunnell as producers – the pair were formerly executives at Netflix.
The Duffers mentioned the pair by name in their statement about joining Paramount last year, stating that Holland and Thunnell were instrumental in getting Stranger Things greenlit at Netflix a decade earlier.
They took a chance on us in 2015,” their statement read, “and they’re taking a chance again – we can’t wait to create new stories together.”
We’ll have to wait and see what stories the Duffers do come out with. They’ve only made one feature film in their careers to date – Hidden, a low-budget, contained apocalyptic thriller starring Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough.
After that, they made one of the most popular shows in Netflix’s history with the rambling Stranger Things saga and its spin-offs, and concluded their era with the streaming firm with The Boroughs, which they produced through their company Upside Down Productions.
The Duffers have recently said that one of their ambitions is to make another movie for the big screen – which, given its seeming allergy to cinemas, was never going to happen at Netflix.
