Although it was removed from Sony’s 2026 schedule, things seem to be moving ahead for the new Street Fighter film. Jason Momoa could be in it.

Back in March we covered a report which stated that Sony had removed its planned Street Fighter movie adaptation from its 2026 release schedule. Given that the project had already gone through one change in director and casting still hadn’t been announced, we couldn’t help but wonder if that marked a quiet end for the production.

Given that the only other live action take on Capcom’s beloved tournament fighting videogame series was a mostly unloved 1994 film starring Kylie Minogue, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this latest incarnation – set to be directed by prank-based road movie Bad Trip's Kitao Sakurai – was facing a similarly ignominious fate.

That appears not to be the case.

This morning, Deadline reports that Legendary, current holders of the rights to Street Fighter, is in negotiations with several actors who will be taking on the roles of the game series’ colourful combatants. According to the outlet, four names have been lined up so far: Andrew Koji (Bullet Train), Jason Momoa (A Minecraft Movie), Noah Centineo (Warfare) and Roman Reigns (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw).

Interestingly, there’s no mention of Sony’s involvement in the report, nor have we learned who has scripted the project. Fans of the long-running game series will no doubt be wondering just how faithful the new film will be. An adaptation issue that won’t be quite as easy to thread as A Minecraft Movie for example, given that the latter is a game whose fans still tend to skew young – even though it has legions of older players too.

Street Fighter, on the other hand, is a series that’s been around since the late 1980s and as such, boasts a fanbase that is far older.

Still, following the huge success of A Minecraft Movie, we’d imagine that Legendary and Capcom (the latter are said to be heavily involved) are going to lean into the bombast, weirdness and colour of the world to attract those younger audiences. Knowing full well, of course, that older fans will be drawn in by the hallowed nature of the Street Fighter name which is still among the most enduringly popular in videogames.

We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
