Ralph Fiennes is getting ready to begin production on The Beacon, which he will write, direct and star in. More details here.

Ralph Fiennes is a busy man. Not only is he currently starring in Shakespeare’s Macbeth in London’s West End, before the production moves to Washington DC for a run in April, Fiennes has been busy preparing for his next directorial feature film.

Fiennes has set The Beacon as his next feature film as a director, as reported by Deadline. The Beacon will be Fiennes’ fourth film as a director, but one thing sets it apart from Coriolanus, The Invisible Woman and The White Crow

The Beacon will be based on Fiennes’ own screenplay. Talking to Deadline, Fiennes described his desire to move into screenwriting as having experienced an “impulse to try to write something myself and that just kept building”.

The film will follow “an eco-idealistic” family who host their daughter’s new boyfriend, who fled war-torn Uganda as an 11-year-old. A senseless act of racism at a concert, however, will force everyone to confront some hard, uncomfortable truths.

Fiennes commented on the film’s premise to Deadline as follows: “I don’t know quite where the story emerged from except that I’m interested in what goes on inside people that cannot be said. The galvanising force was the characters who crystallised. As they became stronger with their wants and needs, and aspirations or frustrations, there was the beginnings of a drama.”

Fiennes also said he’s getting ready to hopefully shoot the project in the Summer of 2024. Fiennes’ Macbeth co-star Indira Varma, Alison Oliver and Charles Babalola will join Fiennes in the cast. Babalola will next be seen in Eli Roth’s Borderlands, while Alison Oliver played Cousin Venetia in last year’s Saltburn.

There’s no release date or distributor for The Beacon just yet, but we’ll keep you updated on those.
