“I’ll bee back,” may have been uttered in the Amazon MGM corridors of power, as it snaps up The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham.
If you know, you know. And those of you that saw last year’s The Beekeeper at the cinema didn’t just help the film to buzz well past $150m at the global box office, you also know just what a delirious cinematic experience it was.
There was so much to enjoy about the film, so news that a sequel was on the way was welcome indeed.
The first film rolled back the years for the mighty Jason Statham, capturing a vintage performance which drove a highly watchable action flick.
Back in February we learned that a sequel was on the way. David Ayer has vacated the director’s chair in favour of fresh pastures, but Kurt Wimmer is back writing the script. Timo Tjahjanto, who recently completed production on the upcoming Nobody 2 is set to take the helm. Tjahjanto will be on set shooting The Beekeeper 2 this autumn.
If production wraps by the end of 2025, we could be seeing The Beekeeper 2 by the end of 2026, although today’s update had nothing new to offer on that front. What we have learned however, is that Amazon MGM has picked up the worldwide distribution rights to the film. The original was a Sky Cinema release in the UK.
Miramax is once again producing the movie, but this latest news is welcome as it almost certainly guarantees that the sequel will see the inside of a cinema again.
That was always likely given that the original film quadrupled its reported production budget during its theatrical run, but for those of us looking forward to seeing Statham (and his bees) returning in the largest format possible, it’s great to see it all but confirmed. No storyline elements have been revealed yet, but we’re secretly hoping that Statham wears his army of bees as a beard this time, an angry buzzing beard he can set on ne’er-do-wells.
On second thoughts, maybe we should leave the writing up to the professionals.
We’ll bring you more on The Beekeeper 2 as we hear it. If you want to read more about why we loved the first film, step this way.
