Plans for a new The Goonies movie have been derailed by Lethal Weapon 5 taking precedence, it seems: more here. Every now and then, a story spikes that a follow-up to 1985’s much-loved The Goonies is on the cards. Writer Chris Columbus has worked on a script, and for a while director Richard Donner was said to be interested in the project too. With the likes of Sean Astin, Corey Feldman and Josh Brolin all interested in returning, there was a path to The Goonies 2 happening. Yet time seems to have taken its toll here. Chatting to Dread Central, Feldman confirmed that he believes the project is now dead in the water. He talked about how his hopes were raised due to the assorted reunions and anniversary celebrations for The Goonies, not least because it brought everyone back together. But Donner, now in his early 90s, has switched attention to a different sequel, that seems to have ended the chances of a fresh Goonies. “All I know is that when I found out my dear friend Richard Donner had signed on to do Lethal Weapon 5 as his swan song, well that pretty much sewed up the rumor mill right there”, Feldman said. “It’s done”. They can’t make the film without him, he said, and Donner’s “off shooting guns with the Lethal Weapon people”. The full interview with Feldman can be found here.
