Jim Carrey has been chatting about a possible The Mask 2.
Throughout his career, Jim Carrey has – at least since the double whammy of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever – been resistant to sequels. The only sequel to one of his own films that he’s made since was the disappointing Dumb And Dumber Too, although he popped up in – and distanced himself from – Kick Ass 2.
He’s next to appear in Sonic The Hedgehog, and whilst promoting the film, he’s opened up a door to the long-mooted The Mask follow-up. After the original hit very big, this was suggested at the time, but Carrey was reluctant to return. A spin-off of sorts – Son Of The Mask – tried and failed to pick up the mantle instead.
Now though, he’s seemingly open to the idea of a proper sequel. Chatting about a possible Sonic sequel, he said that The Mask would also lend itself to a follow-up.
“It depends on a filmmaker really. I don’t want to do it just to do it. But I would only do it if it was some crazy visionary filmmaker. Sure”, he told Comicbook.com.
That’s about as much as Carrey has ever held the door open for a The Mask sequel. Whether the now-Warner Bros-owned New Line Cinema wants to give it a try remains to be seen. It may yet decide that over 25 years on, its moment may have passed.
We’ll keep you posted.
