The new The Naked Gun has the unofficial greenlight, whilst Liam Neeson’s involvement is still yet to be officially announced.
After a long period of suggestions and hints, Paramount Pictures is seemingly moving forwards with a reboot of The Naked Gun. The film looks like it it set to be a legacy sequel rather than a full-blown reboot, with Liam Neeson set to play the son of Detective Frank Drebin, instead of stepping into the role made famous by Leslie Nielsen.
Deadline is stating that the film will happen, despite not getting the official greenlight yet as talks with Neeson are still ongoing.
Apparently, it may have been the success of Top Gun: Maverick that tipped Paramount in favour of the project, whether that 's because the studio is seeking another legacy sequel or is simply awash with cash right now, who knows? The film will be directed by Lonely Island's Akiva Shchaffer and written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who last penned the charming Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins are producing via their company Fuzzy Door.
Liam Neeson confirmed to People a while ago that “I’ve been approached by Seth McFarlane and Paramount Studios to maybe resurrect the Naked Gun films”, adding “it’ll either finish my career or bring it in another direction. I honestly don’t know”.
No shoot or release date has yet been announced but we’ll let you know as further details break.
