Netflixās production slate finally gives long-delayed sequel The Old Guard 2 a release date: expect it on your tellybox on the 2nd July.
Just as we were thinking about buying a funeral wreath for The Old Guard 2, an action sequel stuck in post-production hell since 2022, Netflix comes along and announces a release date. Youāve probably read it by now, but weāll type it again: the fantastical, vaguely Highlander-esque action sequel will stream from the 2nd July 2025.
The original Old Guard came out in the pandemic-riven months of 2020, and with 70 million views, it was deemed successful enough to warrant a sequel. The Hollywood strikes and a regime change at Netflix then delayed work on that follow-up, and earlier this month came a report that The Old Guard 2 might have to be delayed for a second round of reshoots scheduled for early this summer.
The Old Guard 2 is one of numerous films and shows that are due to emerge on Netflix this year. Thereās the much-anticipated Squid Game season 3, which weāve already written a handy post about if youāre interested. Equally eye-catching ā for us at least ā is another long-delayed movie: Havoc, from writer-director Gareth Evans and starring Tom Hardy.
Like The Old Guard 2, Havoc finished its original shoot an aeon ago ā in 2021, to be precise. Since then, itās been delayed more than once, and the last we heard, it was undergoing reshoots ā that was in July 2024. Despite fears of trouble behind the scenes, Netflix has now pencilled it in for a spring 2025 debut.
Elsewhere on Netflixās slate for the year youāll find Guillermo del Toroās Frankenstein, scheduled for the autumn; Rip, a Ben Affleck and Matt Damon thriller; an untitled movie from director Kathryn Bigelow; Happy Gilmore 2; The Thursday Murder Club, Happy Gilmore 2; and Wednesday season 2. Thatās quite a line-up, and thatās before we get to sci-fi action thriller The Electric State ā you can expect to see that, and its gloriously dodgy wigs, on Netflix from the 14th March.
You can find the full slate on Netflixās website.
