Allegations surrounding Neil Gaiman have led to The Sandman being cancelled at Netflix after two just seasons.
Netflixās adaptation of the legendary comic book series The Sandman is to be cancelled after its upcoming second season. This was revealed when Netflix unveiled a new poster for the show. The original run of comic books certainly had enough material for The Sandman to run long past two seasons, but Netflix has decided to end the TV adaptation regardless.
According to Variety, the public fall from grace of series author Neil Gaiman actually has little to do with Netflixās decision to end the show, with plans already in place to cancel it after two seasons. That was even before Gaimanās public reputation was called into question (three words and a whole lot of understatement there).
Thereās evidence to back this up too: the streamer didnāt immediately commission a follow-up to season one, waiting over three months because the audience for the show wasnāt seen to be initially big enough to instantly announce a follow-up to what is surely an expensive television show to make.
Also, the outlet claims that the next season of The Sandman is jumping ahead somewhat in the comic book seriesā timeline, suggesting that it was indeed Netflixās plan to create an abridged version of Gaimanās opus. Still, again, the serious (and very public) allegations that the author is facing wonāt have give Netflix many reasons to consider extending the story to another season.
A few of Gaiman’s ongoing projects have also been impacted by the allegations. Reportedly, development of a film adaptation of The Graveyard Book has been put on hold at Disney while a musical based on Coraline is said to have been abandoned. Also, the final movie wrapping up the Good Omens TV series has started filming in Scotland, but Gaiman has been excluded from the proceedings.
The final season of The Sandman is due to release later this year.
