If you’ve been hankering for a bit of WWII movie action, the next few months are looking like the best you’ve had in a while. Hot on the heels of Steve McQueen’s London drama, Blitz, which is opening the BFI London Film Festival in October, Netflix are swooping in with The Six Triple Eight – a Kerry Washington-lead drama inspired by the first Women’s Army Corps unit of colour to serve overseas in the conflict. They’ve even got a trailer and everything.

Based on the WWII History Magazine article Fighting A Two-Front War by Kevin M. Hymel, the story stars Washington as Major Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion charged with sorting out a rather haphazard logistical backlog to boost morale on the front lines.

“The Six Triple Eight is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of colour to serve overseas in WWII,” the official synopsis reads. “Despite facing racism and sexism – and gruelling working conditions – they were committed to serving their country with honour and distinction. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.”
The Six Triple Eight arrives in select UK cinemas on 6th December and on Netflix from 20th December
