Plans remain afoot for a new Spawn film, with Todd McFarlane revealing that Joker’s success is greasing the wheels.
Towards the end of last year, we charted Todd McFarlane’s attempts to get a new Spawn movie off the ground. The creator of the character, McFarlane has been pursuing a low budget movie reboot, where he gets to keep creative control, for many years. But every time he gets close to it happening, something else seems to happen to make it feel just as far away.
Still, he’s not discouraged. In an update in December 2019’s Toy Fair, McFarlane revealed that the script he penned is now being “polished” by another writer-director. Once that screenplay is tightened up over the coming weeks, McFarlane will then be pitching it to Hollywood, he said at the time. And if nobody there bites, “I have people with money on the sidelines. There are people that are gonna help me make this movie”.
But he might not need them. Thanks to the $1bn gross of Joker, Hollywood is a lot less scared of R-rated comic book movies. And – tellingly alongside a picture of Jamie Foxx, who has long being linked with the film, McFarlane has given a fresh update via Instagram…
It sounds like either way, “the movie’s coming”. No release date has thus far been announced though, and it’s unclear if a previous arrangement with Blumhouse Productions remains in place.
The full interview with McFarlane from December 2019 is available on YouTube here, and he talks an awful lot more about the project in it.
