Next year’s Street Fighter, directed by Kitao Sakurai, will be the third live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise and, understandably, fans are a little worried about it.
The first teaser trailer for the film was released last night at the The Game Awards with the whole cast – minus 50 Cent – in attendance and on stage. It looks… interesting.
Take a look:
Now that’s what you call bonkers! Lasting just 46 seconds, it certainly packs a punch. Or 14.
The trailer includes plenty of references to the games, including signature moves, music and even someone beating up a car, a famous bonus level in the games.
The cast includes Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo, David Dastmalchian, the already mentioned 50 Cent as well as professional wrestlers Cody Rhodes, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i and Hirooki Goto among others. A special mention must go to Rhodes’ hair-do as Guile, the role played by Jean-Claude Van Damme in the 1994 movie. It’s prominent in the best way and this writer wonders how much hairspray such a look requires.
Judging from the trailer, Street Fighter won’t be taking itself too seriously and, honestly, I’m here for that. Previous adaptations – 1994’s Street Fighter and 2003’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li – were both disappointing to say the least, so there’s a decent amount of pressure here to make this work. Perhaps being goofy and packing it full of faithful action from the games is the key.
Street Fighter is currently scheduled to be released on 16th October 2026.
