In a new interview, Saoirse Ronan responds to the rumour that her husband, Jack Lowden, is the new James Bond by talking about dogs and dinner instead.
Sometimes, what an interview subject doesn’t say is as significant as what they do say. That’s our excuse, at any rate, for writing about an interesting little aside from Saoirse Ronan, the superb Hanna and Ladybird actor who just so happens to be married to Jack Lowden.
Lowden, you may recall, is said to be one of the frontrunners for the role of James Bond. In fact, in early September, Gary Oldman caused a stir by saying that he was backing Lowden – his co-star in TV’s hit Slow Horses – for the 007 gig.
Oldman also added that director Denis Villeneuve and his collaborators had already chosen the actor who’d play the part. This led to some theories that a) Oldman was privy to some inside information and that b) he was hinting that Lowden was indeed Bond.
It goes without saying that all this is so much speculation at this point.
Anyway, the Associated Press put all this to Saoirse Ronan, who said, “Gary Oldman thinks [Lowden’s] James Bond” before going on to talk somewhat evasively (it seems to us) about household chores.
“[That’s] its own thing,” Ronan said. “We’re kind of getting on with our life, to be honest. We have plenty of other things to be dealing with. So, yeah, it’s not really a subject that’s coming up in our house, to be honest. The dog needs to be walked, the dinner needs to be made – we’re more focused on that.”
Note that at no point does Ronan deny that the rumours are true. In fact, it could be taken that the couple are trying to maintain a semblance of normalcy ahead of Lowden being announced as one of the most famous characters in pop culture.
In other words, it could mean everything or nothing. Both Oldman and screenwriter Steven Knight have said in recent weeks that the new Bond has already been chosen. This should mean that an official announcement should be imminent. Or at least we hope so – it feels as thought he speculation has been going on for about a century now.
Meanwhile, Jack Lowden has some bins to put out. It’s recycling this week.
We’ll bring you more as we hear it.
