Naomi Ackie has joined the sequel to the 2015 horror hit It Follows, with David Robert Mitchell said to be directing it this summer.
Update: Things finally appear to be gathering pace for They Follow, the belated sequel to David Robert Mitchell’s 2015 horror classic, It Follows.
The filmmaker is currently putting the finishing touches to The End Of Oak Street, his eagerly anticipated (at least by us) dinosaurs-in-suburbia summer action adventure. It stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor and – you guessed it – an awful lot of big dinosaurs.
It sounds as though They Follow will begin production once the publicity trail for that movie has ended; Deadline reports that shooting will begin this summer, which echoes reports from February (see below) that financing is in place and filming will take place this year.
There’s a new bit of casting, too: the same outlet tells us that Naomi Ackie, star of such films as Mickey 17 and I Love Boosters, is in “final talks” to take a part in the film next to returning scream queen Maika Monroe.
We’ll bring you more on They Follow's progress as we get it.
Our previous story follows…
16th February 2026: Things have been ominously quiet about writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s sequel to It Follows, with little more than a handful of announcements since it was announced in 2023. Filming was originally supposed to begin on They Follow in early 2025, but that, clearly didn’t happen.
There are now definite signs of movement, however. Speaking to Variety, producer David Kaplan has provided an update on the sequel’s progress – and while the way he’s phrased his response suggests he’s hedging his bets a little, financing is clearly in place, and filming is pencilled in for this year.
“We have partners in both US and internationally to release the film,” Kaplan told the outlet, adding that it will “hopefully start shooting in the months to come.”
This isn’t the only proof of life, either. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly earlier in February, Maika Monroe, who played Detroit teenager Jay Height in the first movie, again expressed her enthusiasm for the script, before stating, “I would stay positive because I’ve heard some good news recently.”
So why has it taken so long for They Follow to happen? We blame dinosaurs.
For the past three years or so, It Follows director David Robert Mitchell has been busy making a secretive “IMAX thrill-ride” for the production company Bad Robot. Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, little is known about it, but the rumour is that it takes in time travel, missing kids and, yes, dinosaurs.
That film was initially supposed to come out in May 2025, but its release was pushed back somewhat drastically to the 14th August 2026. Most recently, its producers have casually dropped into conversation that they plan to change the title.
(They ought to get a move on if they’re going to do that; six months out from release and there still hasn’t been a trailer. )
All of this will have had a knock-on effect on They Follow; shooting on Flowervale Street originally wrapped in June 2024. Mitchell and his team likely thought they could get going on the It Follows sequel the following May after the dinosaurs-in-time flick’s marketing trail ended.
It’s likely, then, that They Follow will begin shooting this September, after Flowervale Street has finally emerged on extremely large screens.
We’ll bring you more as we get it.
