Barry is one of the finest black comedies on TV of the last decade. The series started in 2018 and quickly gathered a loyal fan base and when the series ended in 2023, we were all devastated.
Bill Hader, the star of Barry, directed several episodes of the series, but the comedian is now moving to directing his first feature film.
Deadline reports that Hader is writing, directing and starring in an all-new horror movie They Know. It’s all based on Hader and his Barry collaborator Duffy Boudreau’s original idea and production will start this spring.
Here’s Deadline’s knowledge of the film’s plot: They Know centers on a divorced dad (Bill Hader) who grows suspicious that his ex-wife is secretly dating a mysterious man who is having a strange influence on their children.
As we’ve already seen with Jordan Peele and Curry Barker, comedians tend to make excellent horror directors due to the two genres having surprisingly similar structures. Both genres try to get a physical response from their audiences, whether it’s laughing or jumping from fear.
Hader isn’t a complete stranger to horror either. He played Richie Tozier in Andy Muchietti’s IT: Chapter 2 in 2019. Hader was also a long-time cast member of Saturday Night Live and appeared in several of the defining comedy films of the early 2000s, such as Superbad, Tropic Thunder and Knocked Up. There’s also his tender performance in Craig Johnson’s 2014 comedy drama The Skeleton Twins, which was our weekly film recommendation over on Instagram just a week ago.
There’s no word on who might star in the film alongside Hader, but I’m sure news on that will follow shortly if the film is already going into production in a few months’ time, courtesy of studio MRC.
