Tom Cruise has the biggest hit of his career on his hands, as Top Gun Maverick goes nuclear at the global box office.
The weekend box office chart in the US made for quite remarkable reading, with the reporting that Top Gun Maverick had reclaimed top spot at the box office, a month after its initial release.
The film has been doing staggering box office since its release, off the back of the best reviews for a blockbuster movie in a long, long time. This past weekend though, it jumped back from third place up to first, overtaking more recent releases such as Jurassic World Dominion and Lightyear. Furthermore, it held off a strong challenge from Elvis and The Black Phone as well.
On its fifth weekend in cinemas though, the Tom Cruise headlined Top Gun sequel added a further $30.5m to its American take, and its US gross now stands at $521m. Add in the money it’s taken elsewhere in the world, and the film soared over $1bn. That’s the biggest grosser in Tom Cruise’s extensive career now, and it’s come from a sequel to a film over three decades old.
The film continues to soar, and whilst the competition is hardly on the shy side in the weeks ahead, don’t be surprised if Top Gun Maverick finds it way through a few more box office barriers yet. It’s turned into the blockbuster movie story of the year, and deservedly so.
