Sky’s new thriller series The Day Of The Jackal, starring Eddie Redmayne, has been renewed for season 2. More on the news below.

The Day Of The Jackal debuted with its first five episodes on Sky Atlantic earlier this month and was an immediate success. According to the very detailed press release Film Stories has received the series has become the biggest Sky Original series ever and scored the biggest launch of any Sky programme in over two years.

The series stars Eddie Redmayne as the titular Jackal, an expert assassin, and Lashana Lynch as the intelligence officer tasked with catching him. The Day Of The Jackal is based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel of the same name, which was also adapted into a film in 1973 with Edward Fox as the Jackal.

Another adaptation came in 1997. Titled The Jackal, Bruce Willis starred as an unnamed assassin, but the film otherwise bears almost no resemblance to Forsyth’s novel.

Here’s the official synopsis for Sky’s adaptation of the novel: An unrivaled and highly elusive lone assassin, the Jackal, (Eddie Redmayne) makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee. But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer (Lashana Lynch) who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.

The show has really tickled the fancy of not just viewers, but critics. Much of the praise has been directed towards Redmayne’s performance.

The current season isn’t over yet, demonstrating a lot of faith in the show from Sky’s end. The series will come to a climax on 12th December with a two episode finale. At this point, it’s unclear whether season one only adapts part of Forsyth’s novel or if season 2 will be a whole new storyline.

There’s also no release date for The Day Of The Jackal season 2 yet, but we’ll make sure to keep you updated on that.
