Austin Butler and Tom Holland are set to start in a 1980s-set drama, American Speed, about car-racing, drug-smuggling brothers.

It looks like we might be seeing Tom Holland pair up with Austin Butler for a tale about car racing, drug smuggling and brotherly love in American Speed. Nothing to do with the Keanu Reeves film mind, with was American and called Speed.

While this American Speed package deal has no director attached as yet, Amazon Studios is said to be interested in the project that would see the young stars tackle ā€˜the true story of Texan brothers Don, Dale and Bill Whittington who were race car drivers. Don and Bill competed in both Le Mans and multiple times in the Indy 500.ā€™

However, the pair ā€˜were also part of the International Motor Sports Association scandal of the 1980s in which drivers financed their racing activities with the proceeds from drug smuggling. In this case, it was marijuana from Colombia. Two of the brothers were arrested.ā€™

No word as yet as to who might play the third brother but with two marquee names already attached, youā€™d imagine that this project will find a home somewhere (although the report over at The Insneider states that Warner Bros and Paramount have already passed).

Both actors have been mixing splashier studio projects with more character-led dramas and it seems to be working out pretty well thus far.

Austin Butlerā€™s career path has afforded him more opportunities in this regard: heā€™s currently working with Darren Aranofsky on Caught Stealing before moving on to (reportedly) collaborate with Micheal Mann on Heat 2. That would mean we wouldnā€™t see this project go in front of cameras until at least the second half of next year.

Likewise, Tom Holland is also rather busy. He has a fourth Spider-Man film coming up, with that process really taking shape now that a director (in the form of Destin Daniel Cretton) is in place. We also learned earlier this summer that an Uncharted sequel was also officially in development at Sony, although weā€™ve been hearing reports of a finished script (and a Mark Wahlberg moustache) since the beginning of the year.

Weā€™ll bring you more details on this one, including title, director and the casting of that elusive third brother if and when we hear it.
