Mike Flanagan’s long awaited take on Clayface is finally coming together, as DC Studios has officially given the green light to the film.

After a run of acclaimed small screen projects, Mike Flanagan is heading back to the big screen. This time, with the mooted Clayface film.

Making his debut in 2011 with Absentia, Flanagan made Oculus in 2013. But it was with the terrific Hush in 2016 that Flanagan really showed horror fans what he could do. After a sojourn into sequels with Ouija: Origin Of Evil, also in 2016, he began a fruitful collaboration with Stephen King.

It began with Gerald’s Game for Netflix in 2017 – a film which for the most part is a psychological thriller but which also contains a violent sequence which is almost impossible to watch – followed by the critically acclaimed Shining sequel Doctor Sleep in 2019, which features a terrifying turn from Rebecca Ferguson as antagonist Rose the Hat.

This is also a good time to recommend Flanagan’s television shows, particularly Midnight Mass and The Fall Of The House Of Usher, both of which are available to stream on Netflix. Oh, and Flangan’s also busy making a new sequel to The Exorcist. He’s a busy chap.

For the last few years, Flanagan has been trying to get a film adaptation of Clayface off the ground for DC Studios. First reported in March 2023, according to Deadline Flanagan has finally been given the green light to write the script. Though we are likely a long way from any news on casting, Alan Tudyk voiced the character in the Harley Quinn animated series, and is voicing another version in the DCU-set Creature Commandos animated series. Given the inter-connectedness of the DCU going forward, Tudyk could reprise the role for the film.

If Flanagan’s busy schedule is anything to go by, we won’t be seeing it for a while. He is currently making that new Exorcist film, and when that’s done there’s the small matter of the television adaptation of Carrie.

DC is currently searching for a director, update you as we hear more.
