Could we see a sequel to 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick? Stories are circulating which suggest the answer could be yes.

It’s just a rumour, but who doesn’t love a good rumour? World of Reel is suggesting that Paramount is pushing hard for a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, last year’s mammoth success which saw Tom Cruise ascend once more to the summit of the Movie Star Mountain. According to the story, there’s no script in place and no casting has been made, but the studio has earmarked a production date of 2025 for the project to go in front of cameras.

Yes, this might all be hearsay and conjecture, but there are a couple of other factors that make us wonder if there might be a little more to it than that. Emily Blunt has been talking about a possible sequel to Edge Of Tomorrow this week, and it doesn’t sound like things are really going anywhere with regards to a follow-up film with Cruise:

“Doug [Liman] and I talk all the time about it,” says Blunt to Variety. “I know Tom wants to do it, hopefully, at some point. But it’s timing – it’s also been 10 years since we made it. There was an amazing script in the works, but I think it would only have worked if we shot it eight years ago. I’m not saying we’re that ancient, but you have to factor in it’s been 10 years.”

Ten years seems like a pretty long time to hold onto a script, wouldn’t you agree? Likewise, stories regarding Tom Cruise’s space movie (that was supposed to be actually shot in space) have quietened down over the last year. All of this means that following the completion of the next Mission: Impossible instalment, Cruise may have a gap in his schedule. A Top Gun-sized gap, perhaps? Likewise, Maverick's director, Joseph Kosinski will likely be free in the latter stages of next year once his Formula One movie for Apple is all done and dusted.

How you might feel about this is, of course, a very personal matter. Whether you choose to celebrate this rumour by playing shirtless beach volleyball, or staring moodily out at the ocean from the deck of an aircraft carrier is up to you – we won’t judge. Should we hear anything more concrete, you can rest assured that we’ll let you know.
