Pearl, the upcoming period horror prequel to X starring Mia Goth, is on the way, and you can catch the trailer right here.
Back in March, A24 launched X, a period horror with an interesting narrative conceit. The film came to us courtesy of The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers director, Ti West and was an entertaining watch, completely unique yet similar in flavour to other A24 releases such as Midsommar.
X was set in the 1970s and really leant into the aesthetic of that era, featuring a small film crew arriving to make an adult film at a lonely Texan farmhouse. However, their creepy hosts, a reclusive aged couple, really didn’t take kindly to the incursion and so begins the screaming, the running and the stabbing. One of those ageing farmowners was Pearl, played by Mia Goth who was heavily aged for the role. Ti West, the film’s director would announce before X released that a prequel film, featuring Goth’s character had also been shot whilst the crew were on location in New Zealand.
Now we have a trailer for that prequel flick, as well as a synopsis:
‘Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl (Mia Goth) must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she’s seen in the movies, Pearl’s ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide in the technicolour-inspired origin story of X’s villain.’
We certainly enjoyed the way X combined trashy sensibilities with an artistic style and as such, are looking forward to checking out Pearl. The film is set to arrive sometime in September, which gives you time to check out X if you haven’t already.
We’ll bring you more news on Pearl as we hear it.

Alex Garland teams with war veteran Ray Mendoza to make an unsparing account of real-world conflict. Our review of Warfare:
Amid the dust, the smoke and the blood, we can scarcely distinguish one face from another. In the shock and numbness following the explosion, all we can hear is the voice of a soldier repeating, "Oh [...]
As Warfare bursts into cinemas, its unique angle to the Iraq war has us wondering if any war film can truly be neutral and apolitical.
Alex Garland has a keen interest in conflict and war. Garland’s 2024 film Civil War imagined the United States as a country split in half by a merciless civil war, a [...]
