Paul W S Anderson is set to bring Sega’s The House Of The Dead to the big screen. More on the news and what he’s up to here.

Director Paul W S Anderson is heading back towards home ground for his film after next, as he’s signed up to write and direct a big screen take on the Sega videogame, The House Of The Dead.

Anderson will be joined by his producing partner Jeremy Bolt for the film, and the simple mechanics of The House Of The Dead give Anderson a fair amount to play with. The game gave you a gun, and suggested you aim it at the on-screen zombies, who came towards you at various speeds.

As an aside, there was a sort-of spin-off called The Typing Of The Dead, that remains the best piece of typing tuition software I’ve ever used.

Anderson will based The House Of The Dead movie on the third game, describing the series as “a cross-generational piece of IP”. As he explains, “if you know the mythology [the third game] is all about family conflict, amidst the action and scares. It’s about a woman, Lisa Rogan, who’s attempting to rescue her father. And it’s also about Daniel Curien, who’s the son of the man who caused this mutant outbreak in the first place and who has to deal with the sins of the father”.

Previously, Paul W S Anderson has directed multiple Resident Evil films, as well as Mortal Kombat and Monster Hunter. The latter came and went a bit during the lockdown era. Since then, he’s been working on In The Lost Lands, based on the writing for George R R Martin. That releases next summer.

Then? It’s straight onto The House Of The Dead, and Anderson will be making sure it’s distinct from the Resident Evil films. He’s promising to lean into the fast-moving, full-on action of the games themselves.

Sega is backing the production, building off the back of the successful Sonic The Hedgehog films (of which the third is just over a month away). The idea is to get the film shooting by this time next year at the latest.

More as we hear it.
