After the success of True Detective: Night Country, HBO has renewed the anthology series for season 5. More on the news below.

True Detective: Night Country wrapped its run earlier this week with a shocking, violent finale. The whole season, spearheaded by Issa Lopez, has divided audiences with its new, more supernatural approach to the traditional True Detective style.

Night Country nevertheless became the most watched season of True Detective, which has prompted HBO to renew the series for another season, with Lopez to return as showrunner.

As all previous seasons have focused on completely new characters, we can assume we’ve seen the last of Jodie Fosters’ Liz Danvers and Kali Reis’ trooper Navarro. That being said, Night Country did break almost all previous True Detective rules, so perhaps we’ll still return to Ennis, Alaska for another chilly mystery.

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto has recently been criticised for venting his feelings over the new season on social media. After the series finale, Pizzolatto created an Instagram post dedicated for fans to hate on the show.

Pizzolatto wrote on Instagram, “I’d say ‘stay civil’ but of course civility has no place when criticism of a television show indicates some form of Hitlerian evil that must be stamped out. So roll on, tide. Satire is welcome, and do try to have a nice day.”

Pizzolatto, who wrote the previous three seasons, is still credited as an executive producer on Night Country, but judging from his reactions to the newest seasons, it’s fair to assume he wasn’t involved in any of the creative decisions.

“From conception to release,” Lopez said in a statement (via Variety), “Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO drama series and films. “She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

No word on a potential release date yet, but we can’t wait for more True Detective. We’ll keep you updated.
