In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, star Chris Pine sounds hopeful about a fantasy-comedy sequel. More below…

Of all the box office missteps of 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves perhaps hurts the most.

A dazzlingly inventive and surprisingly hilarious roller-coaster ride, the DnD movie seemingly had everything going for it. It had near-universal brand recognition the same year Barbie made $1.4b (£1.15b). It starred Hugh Grant as a hand-rubbing villain after Paddington 2 proved he could pull a similar part off with gusto. It was made by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the directors of one of the best comedies of the last 5 years (Game Night).

Chris Pine even hit a man in the face with a lute. What could possibly go wrong?

Unfortunately, Honor Among Thieves, despite making a pretty healthy-looking $208m at the box office, cost $150m to make, and so initially seemed pretty unlikely to turn much of a profit once streaming and home video sales were taken into account. A sequel was (and, to be fair, still is) far from guaranteed.

Now, though, it seems there’s a bit of light at the end of the trap-laden tunnel after all. In a new interview with GamesRadar+ about his role in Disney’s upcoming Wish, Pine seemed more hopeful than most that a Dungeons & Dragons 2 could creep its way over the line.

“I’ve heard some rumors about it,” Pine said. “I don’t know anything yet. But I feel pretty confident that it may happen.” When GamesRadar+ asked if he’d be happy to return, Pine responded: “Absolutely.”

This isn’t the first time that talk of a DnD sequel has been mooted by the people who made it. In an interview with Variety earlier this year, Paramount CEO Brian Robbins remained open to the idea of a follow-up. “We’ve got to figure out a way to make it for less,” he said – which is a lot better than not making it at all.

In the magical world of Hollywood movie accounting, anything is possible. We’re keeping everything crossed for this one.
