Ahead of a return to cinemas in October, the BBFC have taken another look at horror classic Carrie – and decided it’s not all that spooky after all.
Put on your prom dress and watch out for that pig’s blood, because Carrie is coming back to cinemas in 4K this Halloween – and newly graduating high schoolers can finally see it for themselves.
Ahead of the film’s return for the spooky season, the BBFC have taken another look and reclassified the film from an 18 to a 15-rating, according to their most recent guidelines.
The classification now warns how the film includes “strong horror, violence, bloody images, domestic abuse [and] nudity”.
Speaking on the BBFC Podcast, the team discussed how much of the violence which originally made Carrie so shocking isn’t dwelt upon in enough detail to warrant the organisation’s most severe rating.
But while the hosts mentioned how “visually discreet” the violence in the film is, they did highlight the aspect of the film which is probably more disturbing to modern audiences.
“One of the things that is most disturbing about that film today is the depiction of the relationship between Carrie and her mother which is an abusive relationship, and we’ve highlighted domestic abuse in the content advice that we’ve issued for this latest classification,” they said.
This comes a few weeks after the reclassification of another horror classic, Wes Craven’s Nightmare On Elm Street, which also saw its rating drop from an 18-certificate to a 15.
More on reclassified horror classics when we have it. In the meantime, if anyone knows how to get pig’s blood out of a ball gown, please get in touch.
