Issue 45 of Film Stories magazine had as its cover film Red, White & Royal Blue. The romantic comedy drama flew under many people’s radars, but for us, that issue sold like metaphorical hot cakes. Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez led the film, which came out in 2023. Since then? There’s been constant chatter of a sequel, but no formal confirmation.
Well, until now.
Prime Video has given the greenlight to Red, White & Royal Blue 2, or as it’s officially called, Red, White & Royal Blue Wedding.
Both Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zahar Perez are returning for the new film, with Jamie Babbit taking over as director this time around. Matthew Lopez co-wrote and directed the original film, but he’s not returning as director. He’s still co-written the screenplay for Red, White & Royal Blue Wedding, this time with Gemma Burgess and Casey McQuiston. McQuiston is the person behind the source novel.
Jamie Babbit is an interesting choice of director, having previously brought to life the much-loved But I’m A Cheerleader, a film that struggled to find an audience on original release but has deservedly found a following since. Babbit was also behind the pilot episode of Only Murders In The Building.
We don’t yet have a release date for Red, White & Royal Blue Wedding, but filming will be kicking off over the coming weeks. Our best guess is a late 2026 release could be on the cards, but we’ll keep you updated on that.
Who knows: given how many copies of issue 45 the film managed to shift for us, there’s a sporting chance it might get a fair amount of coverage in the relevant magazine issue too. Let’s wait and see on that…
