The Doctor Who Christmas special, The Church On Ruby Road, is returning to a Christmas Day slot on BBC One.

Even as we await the second of three special 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who this coming Saturday, there’s one eye on what’s coming on Christmas Day: the arrival of the 15th Doctor’s first full story.

Ncuti Gatwa becomes the Time Lord in the episode, that’s entitled The Church On Ruby Road. And the BBC has released fresh images from the show, as well as a synopsis.

It reads as follows…

Airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, the episode sees the Doctor come face-to-face with the mythical and mysterious goblins as his life collides with Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.

Little is known about Ruby Sunday as she was abandoned on Christmas Eve as a baby. Now living with her mum, Carla and grandmother, Cherry her world is about to be turned upside when she encounters the Doctor and the two set off on their first adventure together…

We also learn that alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as the new TARDIS team, The Church On Ruby Road will see Davina McCall play herself for reasons not yet revealed. As she says in the official announcement, ““It is beyond an honour to be asked to appear in not only Doctor Who but also Ncuti’s first episode as the new Doctor. It was such an extraordinary experience and Russell has written you all a Christmas delight!  Now I  just can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

Furthermore, it’s been confirmed – and many of us had been expecting this – that Doctor Who will be returning to its Christmas Day slot, that it vacated under the previous showrunner, Chris Chibnall. But now, it’s back on 25th December, at a time we’re set to learn shortly. As current showrunner Russell T Davies declared, ““From Day One in this job, I wanted Doctor Who back on Christmas Day!  And with Ncuti, Millie, Davina and the Goblin King, I hope it’s a feast for all the family!”

Doctor Who is next on our screens on Saturday night at 6.30, with Wild Blue Yonder.
