Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum will head to cinemas in December 2027 as a Christmas treat. More on the film and its release plans below.
We’ve been waiting eagerly for more news about Andy Serkis’ return to Middle Earth as the director has been busy working on Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum.
The film, following the titular fan-favourite character, was announced in May 2024 and Warner Bros. has now dated it for 17th December 2027, as Deadline reports.
Serkis will not only direct, but star as Gollum as he did in the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The original team behind the award-hoarding trilogy, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are heavily involved in The Hunt For Gollum, which is written by Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
Aside from that, we know very little about the film at this stage. Plot details are being kept hidden and there are conflicting reports on whether Viggo Mortensen is involved in the film. Ian McKellen is also likely returning to his role as Gandalf and McKellen teased last year that The Hunt For Gollum would be split into two films. The news ended up being debunked by Boyens later as she clarified no such plans were in place and that The Hunt For Gollum would be a single film.
The franchise is in need of a bit of a push after The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim failed to make much of an impression at the box office. Viewership for the franchise’s TV offering, The Rings Of Power, also decreased in its second season, but a third season is in the works.
When we know more about The Hunt For Gollum, we’ll be sure to let you know.
