Catherine Tate’s cantankerous character, Nan, is going on a road trip in the new trailer for The Nan Movie.
Warner Bros has released a trailer for the much-delayed The Nan Movie, based on Catherine Tate’s titular character. The film about the foul-mouthed pensioner was first announced in 2019, with a planned June 2020 release date. Now the release is much more concrete – it’s coming to UK cinemas on 18th March.
Costarring Gavin & Stacey actor Mathew Horne as the character’s grandson, the film sees them go on a road trip to see unwell Aunt Nell. Of course, things don’t exactly go to plan, mostly on account of Nan not wanting to see Nell at all. In true Nan fashion, she acts out in the most outrageous ways possible, including going to a rave and arguing with police officers. The film will combine Nan’s present with her past, revealing what exactly made her the way she is.

The official synopsis reads “Catherine Tate’s iconic character Nan hits the big screen as she goes on a wild road trip from London to Ireland with her grandson Jamie (Mathew Horne) to make amends with her estranged sister Nell (Katherine Parkinson). Militant vegan arsonists, raucous rugby teams, all night raves and crazed cops on motorbikes all make for a proper day out. An origin story that mixes Nan’s present with her past where we finally find out what’s made her the cantankerous old b*****d she is today.”
The Nan Movie has an interesting crew behind it. Directing is Josie Rourke, who helmed the Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan-led Mary Queen Of Scots. Tate of course contributed to the script herself, and co-writing with her is Brett Goldstein, who has acted in and written episodes of Ted Lasso.
Nan made her debut on The Catherine Tate Show and has proven controversial, with the BBC having to make clear that her offensive views and comments do not reflect the views acceptable in the modern world. Tate has brought the character back for four specials between 2009 and 2015, before going on to work on this film.
The Nan Movie is released in UK cinemas on 18th March.
