Following their closure by Disney, the staff at Blue Sky Studios have snuck out one final piece of work, one year later.
Disney’s $70bn+ takeover of 21st Century Fox and its many assets may have, as the internet told us, led to X-Men being able to join Marvel films, but the real-life consequences were felt by thousands of people who lost their jobs as a result of the deal. Furthermore, many projects were shut down, never to return.
For the staff of Blue Sky Studios, the animation studio that had brought Fox regular family hits such as the Ice Age and Rio movies, along with the excellent Horton Hears A Who, it was a particularly testing time. Disney, not really needing another animation studio, simply shut Blue Sky down after a couple of decades in operation. Projects were cancelled, the core brands were transferred to the Disney asset register, and that was that. Off you pop to find another job.

Just over a year since Blue Sky Studios closed its doors for the final time, and a clip has just been posted on an unnamed YouTube account. The unlisted clip comes with a description that reads ‘In the final days of Blue Sky Studios, a small team of artists came together to do one final shot. This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms’.
Viewers of the Ice Age movies – and there was no shortage of them – will be very aware of the antics of Scrat, as he scrambles to try and retrieve an acorn. Here then is the final work of the Blue Sky team in its original form…
