This week’s independent UK podcast choice is the Asian Cinema Club – and here’s why.

With Bong Joon-ho’s black comedy thriller Parasite released in the UK today, and seen as a serious contender for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards, focus has gravitated recently towards Asian cinema as being a treasure trove of excellent stories, performances, cinematography, stunt work and direction, that the vast majority of the cinema-going public isn’t actually aware of, but clearly should be! This is where the terrific Asian Cinema Film Club comes in.

Asian Cinema Film Club is hosted by Elwood Jones and Stephen Palmer; both lifelong cinema fans who wanted a podcast outlet to focus on the Asian cinema they both fell in love with at a young age. Asian Cinema Film Club started out in 2017 as an offshoot of another podcast which looked at foreign cinema, and it was through this podcast that Elwood and Stephen met and discovered this share mutual appreciation for Asian cinema specifically.

Asian Cinema Film Club prides itself on being an introduction to Asian cinema, as well as a medium by which to show that Asian cinema doesn’t just consist of martial arts, anime, Godzilla and horror films; that Asian cinema is just as all-encompassing, rich and diverse as Western cinema, with some of the most creative directors currently working, from the visual style of Park Chan Wook and Zhang Yimou, through to cult legends like John Woo, Ringo Lam and Ishirō Honda.

Elwood and Stephen’s passion for Asian cinema is so infectious and apparent from the first listen. They’re both clearly extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic and take the time to not only highlight the movie they are covering, but also recommend alternatives. They also enlist regular contributors and guest hosts who all share a dedication for specific genres of Asian cinema, to break down any purported cultural barriers and encourage people to look past subtitles to really enjoy the rich and varied storytelling that Asian cinema offers.

From romantic dramas, comedies and arthouse film through to action, sci-fi and even K-Pop, Asian Cinema Film Club really is your one-stop shop for anyone interested in experiencing the wonderful cinematic buffet that Asian cinema offers; from the complete newbie all the way through to seasoned fans.

If you like a lot of quality Asian cinema discussion, join their club!
