British Movie Podcast of the Week – Beyond The Box Set

Our UK independent podcast recommendation this week takes movies a step further.

Have you ever wondered what happened after the events of Love Actually, Scrooged or Elf? (It’s almost Christmas, we know you’re probably watching them). Well you need wonder no more, because Beyond The Box Set has the (probable!) answers to these and a whole host of other classic non-festive standalone movies which never had a sequel, reboot, prequel or remake and should/could have.

Created and hosted by best friends John Lucas and Harry Chappell, Beyond The Box Set’s premise is pitching fantasy sequel ideas for movies that nobody in their right mind would ever think of, let alone actually film. Like most podcasts featured in this series, the idea for Beyond The Box Set came from alcoholic consumption, albeit this time in Amsterdam.

John and Harry share a love of movies but admittedly have very different tastes. They wanted a concept that set them apart from other podcasts and both being creative types hit upon the idea of fantasy sequels and they ran with it and have now been podcasting for almost three years. They love to engage with listeners for their sequel ideas, often posting on social media for listener contributions and feedback. The more ridiculous, sacrilegious and unfilmable, the better!

They cover a wide variety of genres in their (so far) 146 episodes and the sequel pitches are often silly but always imaginative and hilarious. It’s engaging and entertaining, and as always the chemistry just shines through.

If you want additional proof that this is a quality podcast, they were featured as one of The Guardian’s ‘Podcasts of the Week’ and also featured on Apple’s front page as a ‘Binge-worthy show’ for over a year!
