Digital de-ageing is now a common franchise filmmaking tool - but where does it all end? Mark Harrison has some thoughts...

In 1981’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Indiana Jones memorably told Marion Ravenwood: “It’s not the years, honey, it’s the mileage.” More than 40 years later, the Man In The Hat is back this summer for his fifth adventure, in which visual effects will wind back both the clock and the odometer on its 78-year-old star Harrison Ford.
Directed by James Mangold, Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny will start with a prologue set in 1944. Most of the film catches up with Indy in the late 1960s, but the marketing for the film has prominently shown off the ever-more-impressive effects used to de-age, in this case, Harrison Ford.
Having worked with Lucasfilm a fair bit in his younger years, there’s a lot of reference footage of a younger Ford to draw upon, and that seems to have been the turning point for the de-ageing effects pioneered by Lola Visual Effects and popularised by Marvel Studios.
There’s always the ‘uncanny valley’ effect, but of course, the paradox is that no matter how realistic the technology gets, we know we’re looking at a special effect because the contemporary Ford is also in the movie. And thus far, Hollywood has largely used it in capacities where the younger digital character can be differentiated from the real actor elsewhere in the film.
In 2019, confirming that he would pick up Dr Jones’s hat and whip for one final outing, Ford told NBC Today: “I’m Indiana Jones […] When I’m gone, he’s gone.”
However, given Disney and Lucasfilm’s taste for de-ageing stars or even resurrecting them with visual effects, it’s just possible that we’ll soon see more of the technology being used to separate returnable characters from ageing or absent actors. An animated Indiana Jones movie sounds like a good idea to us, but might Dial Of Destiny’s prologue lay the groundwork for an Indiana Jones franchise where a Ford facsimile runs around in live-action settings? The rapid recent evolution of – and, more importantly, the use of – de-aging in recent movies suggest it might.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-technical-marvel">Technical Marvel</h2>



<p>The story of digital de-ageing begins in 1986. Well, the version of 1986 we see in the prologue of 2006’s <em>X-Men: The Last Stand</em>, anyway – in which Professor X and Magneto first invite young Jean Grey to join their school for gifted youngsters.</p>



<p>Amid the mixed reviews for Brett Ratner’s threequel, there was a lot of pre-release publicity about the visual effects used to make Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen look 20 years younger.</p>



<p>Lola was the effects house behind this bit of movie magic, with a technique they called ‘digital skin grafting’. Based more on innovating with existing tools than developing new ones, this process was applied to the actors in post-production, with no need for the usual tracking dots associated with performance-capture work.</p>



<p>The effects artists, including future directors the Brothers Strause, had developed the technique while touching up music videos and adverts.</p>



<p>Within a couple of years, Lola had contributed to the Oscar- winning effects of <em>The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button</em>, perhaps the only film of its time where de-ageing is absolutely necessary to the narrative.</p>



<p>Back on the franchise front, Jeff Bridges’ digital clone in <em>Tron: Legacy</em> made more headlines, but it’s Lola’s further work on Marvel movies that made a blockbusting splash.</p>



<p>After un-biggening Chris Evans for the pre-super-soldier sequence of the first <em>Captain America</em> movie and ageing up Hayley Atwell in the sequel, the opening sequence of 2015’s <em>Ant-Man</em> unexpectedly confronts the audience with Michael Douglas circa 1989.</p>



<p>In a little less than a decade, you can both see how the technology has developed and appreciate what the visual-effects artists can do with a greater catalogue of contemporary film references of Douglas earlier in his career – just like Ford in the new Indiana Jones outing.</p>



<p>It also establishes what the Marvel Cinematic Universe specifically uses this technology for – inserting flashbacks and retroactive continuity into a timeline that sprawls from World War II to the present day with liberal CG face replacements, whether it’s Robert Downey Jr in <em>Captain America: Civil War</em> or Kurt Russell in <em>Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2.</em></p>



<p>Its most impressive and extensive use of de- ageing is Samuel L Jackson in 2019’s 1990s-set prequel, <em>Captain Marvel</em>. When the entire feature is a flashback to an as-yet-unseen adventure, Nick Fury becomes the second lead, with Jackson digitally made up to look like himself somewhere between <em>The Long Kiss Goodnight</em> and <em>The Negotiator</em>.</p>



<p>Of course, 2019 proved a watershed moment for de-ageing VFX, as Industrial Light &amp; Magic got on board with the effects work used to make Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci look decades younger in Martin Scorsese’s crime opus <em>The Irishman</em>. In this case, much has already been written about how the drama falls flat whenever the younger faces don’t match the noticeably older physicality of the performers. It is particularly evident in a scene where 30-something Frank Sheeran runs and fights like a 76-year-old De Niro – which he is, under the VFX slather.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, the effects lend to the metatextual angle of the film – Scorsese has not come to praise the gangster epic but to bury it, and he persuasively makes the case that you can only do that with the actors who were there. As a funeral for a particular style of movie, you expect to see familiar faces from its violent life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-battle-of-wills">Battle of Wills</h2>



<p>And then there’s the other big 2019 de-ageing movie – the Will Smith vs Will Smith action vehicle, <em>Gemini Man</em>.</p>



<p>Receiving a more muted critical response than <em>The Irishman</em>, Ang Lee’s film serves up the biggest meta-critique of de-ageing thus far by relating the redundancy of ageing action-movie stars to an amoral sci-fi military-industrial complex that, if left unchecked, will just keep cloning new Will Smiths for as long as it profits from them.</p>



<p><em>Gemini Man</em> began life as a spec script by Darren Lemke. Originally sold to Warner Bros. in 1997, it spent 20 years in turnaround and development hell as various studios attempted to develop new visual effects for stars like Mel Gibson, Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, and Clint Eastwood to play dual lead roles. In the end, 1990s superstar Smith was old enough to play a mature assassin by the time the visual effects caught up with the concept behind the film.</p>



<p>On this one, it was Weta Digital, not Lola, that did the de- ageing work, developing a belt-and-braces approach of digitally replicating Smith’s appearance and movements and then interpolating screen references from his older movies into a CG character. The character of ‘Junior’ is entirely digital, rather than a face-replacement job. Yet, despite its many rewrites and the mass of VFX innovations over its time in development, the film never quite shakes off its ’90s action movie origins – it’s a <em>Face/Off</em>-a-like Jerry Bruckheimer production that mentions the cloning of Dolly the sheep some 22 years after that was a contemporary reference.</p>



<p>Indeed, nobody who’s seen (and/or enjoyed) Lee’s take on <em>Hulk</em> will be surprised at what it’s accumulated on his watch – its double exposure of Smith’s unsettled ex-Marine Henry Brogan moves in cycles of male trauma and violence. Whatever you think of the film, it uses de-ageing like nothing else has managed to so far, directly relating its artifice to its intrigue. Inevitably, there are a couple of unintended uncanny valley moments with the clone in the film, but to circumvent the usual audience disconnect, he isn’t an exact copy of Smith in the 1990s.</p>



<p>Like the savage X-24 clone in 2017’s <em>Logan</em> (another Marvel-backed, Mangold-directed outing), 23-year-old Junior is a meaner, more muscular version of <em>Fresh Prince</em>-era Smith, once- removed from the movie star we remember. The characterisation serves to blur the edges between the actor and the fiction, as well as the animation and the real thing.</p>



<p>This leaves the ‘real’ Smith to reckon with his own advancing years in the context of the type of VFX- driven sci-fi actioner he helped popularise when he looked not much older than Junior. That might have been a load-bearing fourth wall for some audiences, mind – with poor reviews and an underwhelming box- office haul,<em> Gemini Man</em> wasn’t the type of Big Willie-style hit it might have been in 1997.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-digital-assets">Digital assets</h2>



<p>Interestingly, ahead of <em>Gemini Man</em>’s release, various outlets reported that Smith retained the rights to use Junior in films, but it was unclear where the rights to the data gathered in creating the digital character lie. </p>



<p>The implication is that we won’t be seeing Junior in a movie again unless Smith wants us to, but as new processes are developed, it must be a contractual minefield for actors, particularly for women. Like many Hollywood developments, digital de-ageing could open up whole new disappointing frontiers in ageism and gender inequality.</p>



<p>This is partly the subject of Ari Folman’s 2013 animated/live-action-hybrid odyssey, <em>The Congress</em>. Loosely based on a sci-fi novel by Stanislaw Lem, the film stars Robin Wright as a fictionalised version of herself, who negotiates the sale of her animated screen persona to Hollywood behemoth Miramount Studios to raise money for her ailing son’s healthcare.</p>



<p>But to get her big pay-off, the fictional Wright must also agree never to act again because, as Danny Huston’s studio head sneers: “I need Buttercup from <em>Princess Bride</em>. I need Jenny from <em>Forrest Gump</em>. I don’t need you.”</p>



<p>It&#8217;s pointedly a film about how female movie stars are commodified, but it now feels timelier than ever. After Wright begrudgingly agrees, her animated avatar is promptly repurposed in the Rebel Robot Robin superhero franchise, perhaps foreshadowing how women have similarly been deployed in franchise movie flashbacks, rather than <em>Gemini Man</em>-style vehicles.</p>



<p>Comic-book movie examples include Michelle Pfeiffer in <em>Ant- Man And The Wasp</em> and Nicole Kidman in <em>Aquaman</em>. Heck, we’re old enough to remember when both women were the female leads in 1990s Batman movies, but here they’re cast as mums with how they looked then vs now awarded equal screen time.</p>



<p>Both Pfeiffer and Kidman had, or are expected to have, larger roles in this year’s sequels to those movies, but only once they too have become objects of the Marvel and DC universes. As portended by <em>Gemini Man</em>, these digitised actors aren’t characters but objects, or assets, but it remains that male actors seem to have more control over that objectification.</p>



<p>Whether for themselves or their audience, they usually get to square up to their younger digital clones and come off better, as with the duelling T-800s in <em>Terminator Genisys</em>. And yet when Sean Young’s replicant Rachael tips up in <em>Blade Runner 2049</em>, it’s for a cameo in which she can be summarily demolished by Jared Leto.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-obsolete-actors">Obsolete actors?</h2>



<p>Eerily though, the portrayals of Robin in <em>The Congress</em> and Rachael in <em>Blade Runner 2049</em> have echoes in Disney’s use of de-ageing. For a studio that trades in nostalgia and legacy properties more than any other around, it seems as though it’s putting characters in the toy- box for later, even if the actors don’t want to come around to play.</p>



<p>For Marvel, the goal is to create a young Nick Fury rather than a young Samuel L Jackson, or a teenage Tony Stark instead of a Less Than Zero-year-old Downey Jr. And while most examples use a physical performance as a reference, it’s Disney that is leading the way on firming up characters as library assets, with the original actors’ consent.</p>



<p>Both of Ford’s <em>Star Wars</em> co- leads have already been recreated without their involvement. Some of us found out Carrie Fisher passed away in December 2016 right after watching <em>Rogue One</em> at the cinema and feared that the uncanny-valley ‘Special Edition’ of Princess Leia from the end of that film might be used to complete the sequel trilogy.</p>



<p>Despite Disney’s initial assurances that Fisher would appear only in unused footage from previous films, 2019’s <em>The Rise Of Skywalker </em>did ultimately use CG face-replacement for a Jedi training flashback scene with Leia, featuring Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd as her body double.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, Mark Hamill seems to have been digitally divorced from Luke Skywalker’s appearances in the Star Wars streaming shows going forward. He was de-aged for a much-celebrated cameo in <em>The Mandalorian</em>, but Luke was digitally recreated, voice and all, for <em>The Book Of Boba Fett</em>.</p>



<p>In 2022, we also learned that James Earl Jones has retired from voicing Darth Vader. But he’s similarly authorised Lucasfilm to process his archive recordings through AI software to create new content without him.</p>



<p>When Ford says when he’s gone, so is Indiana Jones, but you could be forgiven for wondering if that’s final. Disney certainly seems up for recreating characters digitally when it suits its fan-service delivery system. Crucially, we’re unlikely to see digitised Smiths or Fords running about without the stars’ say-so, but in a marketplace where movie stars are rarely a sure thing but franchises keep on coming, who knows where another decade of digital de-ageing might take things?</p>



<p>Beyond Indiana Jones, forthcoming franchise films that feature de-aged characters range from <em>The Flash</em> to <em>Fast X</em>. Also on the horizon, director Robert Zemeckis continues a trend of using VFX in his storytelling with 2024’s <em>Here</em>, an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s sci-fi graphic novel.</p>



<p>Set over many years, the film will reunite Zemeckis with Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and… you guessed it… Robin Wright. Both stars will be digitally de-aged to show the passage of time for their characters. Whatever happens with <em>Here</em>, we’re looking forward to seeing if <em>The Congress</em> comes up on the press tour.</p>
