It’s official: A24 are partnering up with Hideo Kojima for a feature film adaptation of Kojima’s acclaimed 2019 video game Death Stranding.

While we already knew that Hideo Kojima was developing a film adaptation of Death Stranding, his 2019 hit video game, the details have been kept under wraps. The project will be produced by Kojima Productions, but now, acclaimed US studio A24 have also boarded the project.

A24 sneaked the news out via a new T-shirt listing, which proudly announces that the studio has “partnered with Kojima Productions on the live-action feature film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game, DEATH STRANDING.”

This is great news. A24 is one of the most prolific studios at the moment and they’ve branded themselves as a bit of a safe haven for filmmakers to execute their creative vision without too much interference from people who wear suits to work every day.

There’s no word on who might direct the Death Stranding film, but Kojima has ruled himself out of that job. The game itself features a pretty starry cast with Norman Reedus playing the main role. Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo Del Toro, Margaret Qualley and Léa Seydoux also appear in the game. It’s not clear whether any of them will reprise their roles or what the exact plot of the film adaptation will be.

Death Stranding takes place in an apocalyptic United States of America, where invisible creatures roam the land, ready to pounce on anyone daring to cross it. Reedus’ Sam Porter Bridges delivers goods to colonies and much of the game is spent walking and balancing the supplies on your back. The game takes roughly 40 hours to complete, more if you’re a perfectionist. For comparison, The Last Of Us Part II for example, takes roughly 25 hours, which should give you an idea of how extensive Kojima’s game is.

We also don’t know when the project is looking to start shooting or when it will be out. All we know is that it is most definitely happening and so far, all the right people are involved, so the game and its story is in safe hands.
