Once again, producer James Cameron has said that a sequel to 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel will still happen – perhaps more than one sequel.
James Cameron may be up to his neck in the Avatar universe, but he’s still insistent that a sequel to the 2019 sci-fi film Alita: Battle Angel will still happen.
Talking to Empire magazine, the veteran filmmaker, who produced and co-wrote the first film, said that he and director Robert Rodriguez have “sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie.”
He also suggested that it could lead to a third Alita, though only if the right story idea comes along: “We’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more,” he said.
This is far from the first time that a sequel has been talked about. The producer Jon Landau was enthusiastic about making one, and spoke about it on more than one occasion before he passed away in 2024.

Things could be different this time, however, thanks to two things: timing and geography. Cameron has just finished his latest film in the Avatarverse, as nobody’s calling it, Fire And Ash, out in December. That should leave him with a bit of spare time between projects. Then there’s the geography bit: Cameron is now Rodriguez’s neighbour. Well, sort of.
“Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks.”
Based on the manga and anime Battle Angel Alita, Alita: Battle Angel was a zesty cyberpunk action thriller starring Rosa Salazar as the titular cyborg. There violent future sports, a benign eccentric scientist (played by Christoph Waltz) and lots of action. It was a modest hit at the time, but has found a deserved following since.
Cameron has other projects in his sights, including The Devils, based on the Joe Abercrombie novel, and Last Train From Hiroshima. There are also other Avatar sequels in the works, and his dabblings in generative AI. By the sounds of things, a second Alita could also be high on the to-do list.
