Better known as Cluedo in the UK, Clue could eventually be a TV series, as Hasbro and Sony announce the latest effort to adapt the boardgame.

Movies based on toys and games bring in audiences these days. People also seem to like murder mysteries, if Knives Out is anything to go by. All of which might explain why Hasbro is partnering Sony in another attempt to adapt the murder mystery boardgame Clue (known in the UK as Cluedo) for the screen.

As reported by Variety, Hasbro Entertainment and Sony have signed a deal to make a film or TV series – at the time of writing, it isn’t clear which route the two corporations will take.

In a statement shared by the outlet, bosses from Hasbro described Clue as “culturally impactful,” which is quite a funny thing to say about an old boardgame that comes with a tiny piece of string and a miniature pistol, but that’s the 21st century for you.

“Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as Clue,” Hasbro’s blurb reads. “Nicole Brown [TrisStar Pictures president], Katherine Pope [Sony Pictures TV studios], and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.”

Clue was previously adapted into in 1985, with that movie (starring Tim Curry, pictured) famously given different endings that varied from cinema to cinema.

There have been multiple attempts to make a new Clue since, with the most recent announced in 2022 – Ryan Reynolds was supposed to star, The Muppets’ James Bobbin was going to direct, and the whole thing was being bankrolled by Universal. Then the studio dropped it and 20th Century Fox took it on. The new deal between Hasbro and Sony presumably means the whole Reynolds project, written by The Lost City's Oren Uziel, has been quietly killed off – perhaps with a miniature pistol.

The Clue announcement comes in the wake of doll-based phenomenon Barbie, the success of which has seen its star and producer Margot Robbie embark on an adaptation of Monopoly – another old boardgame owned by Hasbro.

More on these and other boardgame projects as we get it.
