Matthew Vaughn says he knows a “few snippets” about Deadpool 3, and argues that it’ll save the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There’s lots of anticipation surrounding this summer’s Deadpool 3, not least because it pairs Ryan Reynolds’ title antihero with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. One person who’s really excited about Deadpool 3, though, is director Matthew Vaughn, who’s enthused about the superhero sequel in an interview with BroBible (via Variety).

According to Vaughn, Deadpool 3 will be not merely good, but ‘unbelievable’ – such that it’ll “save the whole Marvel Universe.”

Before we get too carried away, it’s worth pointing out that Vaughn hasn’t seen the film itself yet – it only wrapped filming on the 24th January, so it’s probably little more than an assembly cut at present. Rather, Vaughn has gleaned a ‘few snippets’ that suggest to him that Deadpool 3 will be the movie that turns the MCU’s wobbling fortunes around.

“The few snippets that I know about ‘Deadpool vs. Wolverine’ or ‘Wolverine vs. Deadpool’ – I’m sure that argument between Ryan and Hugh is happening as we speak – are unbelievable,” Vaughn said on BroBible’s Post Credit podcast. “That’s going to be the jolt…the Marvel universe is about to have a jolt of them and it’s going to bring that body back to life…I think Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are about to save the whole Marvel Universe.”

Vaughn certainly knows a thing or two about superhero movies, having directed 2011’s X-Men: First Class, back when that particular comic book strand was still owned by 20th Century Fox. “I’m a genuine fan of the X-Men,” the director said in that podcast; “all I want is for the movies to be as good as they should be.”

With other Marvel films hit by delays – Captain America: Brave New World, The Thunderbolts and Blade have all been pushed back to 2025Deadpool 3 is now the company’s only cinema release this year, there’s a lot riding on Ryan Reynolds’ latest febrile outing. But with the film said to be stuffed with nostalgia-prodding cameos – Jennifer Garner and Patrick Stewart are said to have roles – it’s possible that Marvel will be able to find some Spider-Man: No Way Home-style success after the box office disappointments of Ant-Man: Quantumania and The Marvels.

Vaughn is currently promoting his own big action caper, the much-hyped Argylle, out on the 2nd February. Maybe he’s hoping Marvel will ask him to make another X-Men movie at some point in the near future…?

Deadpool 3 is out in UK cinemas on the 26th July.
