Ncuti Gatwa’s first season as Doctor Who hasn’t even aired yet, but showrunner Russell T Davies is already planning ahead.

Doctor Who is celebrating 60 years of excellence with a trio of specials, starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. The first of these will hit our telly screens on 25th November, with the next two following on a weekly basis.

Ncuti Gatwa will be playing the Fifteenth Doctor, and his first season will be airing sometime in 2024. A second season – or season 15 – with his Doctor is already in production and expected to arrive in 2025.

Showrunner Russell T Davies told SFX magazine that he’s already preparing the way for more seasons.

“I’m planning season three now, there’s plans for season four,” Davies told SFX. The upcoming season with Gatwa as the Doctor is being treated as a reset of sorts and being referred to as Season 1.

Nothing has been confirmed officially, but it’s still a ray of hope that we’re getting more Doctor Who sooner rather than later. Gatwa has only signed on for two seasons and it’s unclear whether Gatwa would carry on playing the Time Lord or if he’ll be replaced by a new incarnation of the timeless being.

Davies spoke enthusiastically about his return to the series which he also helmed from 2005 to 2010. “At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, but I really, really mean this – they were going to do this to the show anyway and I genuinely thought, ‘It needs looking after,'” Davies noted.

It’s a great time to be a Doctor Who fan. As of today, a plethora of Doctor Who episodes and materials are available on BBC iPlayer. Make sure to check out our very handy guide to that here.

BBC’s Imagine is also dedicating an upcoming episode to Davies, going behind the scenes on the new season of Doctor Who.

Film Stories is also busy working on a feature documentary on Sylvester McCoy, who memorably played the Doctor from 1987 to 1989. The film is directed by our very own Simon Brew and will include a brand new, candid interview with McCoy as well as some never-before-seen material from the actor’s personal archives. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news on Sylvester: Who’s The Real McCoy?.
