Eddie Murphy has committed to Amazon to develop ‘original film projects’ following the success of Coming 2 America.

Eddie Murphy has finalised a deal with Amazon Studios that will see him develop, produce and star in at least three films for the streaming platform. The announcement comes following the success of Murphy’s Coming 2 America, which released on the streaming service in March and did exceedingly well, especially in America. The film was originally put together by Paramount, who sold it, along with several other titles, when cinemas were closed during the pandemic.

It’s certainly good news for Murphy fans, with the actor’s career resurgence continuing following a brilliant turn in 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name. This won’t affect the production of Beverly Hills Cop 4, which continues to inch closer to production, with Paramount and Netflix co-producing that project.

The Amazon announcement marks a full turnaround for Murphy, who only a couple of years ago was talking about Coming 2 America being his final film, at least for a while. The actor was discussing returning to stand-up comedy and said he couldn’t ‘imagine wanting to do movies again.’ The deal with Amazon certainly reverses that notion and we’re looking forward to seeing what Murphy, presumably with a greater degree of creative control over his projects, decides to do next. As long as it’s not Meet Dave 2
