After a flurry of reports about a new Christmas special, co-creator Ruth Jones has denied that any new episodes of Gavin and Stacey are in the pipeline.

Yesterday, US entertainment website Deadline reported that Gavin and Stacey was set to return for a Christmas special this year, five years after the last episode aired. The news went viral on social media, lots of places picked up on it and, despite no official confirmation from either the BBC or creators Ruth Jones and James Corden, fans have been clamouring for more information.

Sadly, Jones has poured cold water on the speculation. Without fully dismissing the possibility of a reunion, she said it was “sadly a rumour”.

Speaking to Irish station RTE Radio 1, she added: “All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, [co-creator] James [Corden] and I would happily announce it, we would.”

BBC Studios and Jones and Corden’s respective production companies, Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, have also offered no official confirmation of the festive episode.

Meanwhile, Steffan Rhodri, who plays Dave Coaches on the sitcom, has told BBC One’s Morning Live that he had “no knowledge to impart”, going on to say that “I’ve heard there was a rumour, I never know where they start and I certainly don’t know where they’ll end”.

In other Gavin and Stacey news, a report in yesterday’s Sun suggested that Netflix is trying to poach the sitcom from the BBC, quoting an anonymous source.

Netflix has denied the story, and Jones also rubbished it to RTE, saying: “Apparently there’s a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix and I love it because it says ‘a source says’. Who is this source?”.

You can watch all episodes of Gavin and Stacey on BBC iPlayer.
