Kaiji collide in the latest trailer for next year’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Take a look:

UPDATE: A second trailer for the film has now landed, and it looks like this…

Here’s where we were back in December 2023…

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon sparked a minor ripple of controversy with its scene of Bonaparte’s army firing cannonballs at the Pyramids of Giza. It’s somewhat disconcerting, then, to see the same pyramids again under assault – this time frow what appears to be a giant ape wearing a robot arm.

This is Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard’s sequel to his own 2021 monster mash-up, Godzilla Vs Kong. Rebecca Hall returns as Dr Ilene Andrews, leading a cast which includes a returning Brian Tyree Henry and franchise newcomer Dan Stevens as the fleshy humans running about among the kaijus’ feet.

The real focus of the MonsterVerse sequel, though, is the action, and as you can see from the trailer below, there’ll be lots of it. In an interview with IGN, Wingard has talked a bit about a new antagonist who’ll show up in Godzilla X Kong – a “devilish, Kong-type character”. Could that be the giant ape with the robot arm seen bothering the pyramids in the trailer? Quite possibly.

Of the film’s stompy mayhem, Wingard told IGN, “So much of the film is entirely animated CG shots… we have some sequences going up to about eight minutes long, where it’s just the monsters doing their thing, and so the movie really allows the monsters to tell their own narrative in a visual, nonverbal way.”

Presumably, the wide-eyed baby giant ape (for want of a better description) will be part of that nonverbal, CG-encrusted storytelling.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is out in UK cinemas on the 12th April 2024. If you’re after more MonsterVerse antics in the meantime, Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters is available to stream on AppleTV+, while the superb-looking Godzilla Minus One is out in UK cinemas on the 15th December 2023.
